Chaos, or Roy Shen, was born on August 3rd. He was born to a fairly wealthy family of two and their inhome house keeper. His mother had had another boy as well, but she claimed to her husband the child had been stolen. His mother and father doted on him until age two, when Troy Shen, his close cousin on his mothers side, moved in. It wasn't much of a move, seeing as the village was isolated and family lived near family, but it had a significance to the two boys. From that moment on, the two were unseperable. They were both identical, almost even in birthdate, and though Troy seemed more likely to fall into disaster or to trip up wires, even in interests the two were alike. Roy was born into one of the few unknown villages which still exist in the U.S, and around the time he and Troy turned five, the electricity-less village was found by loggers. Of course, this caused a large commotion on the news. Land disputes, a new court, and a police force immediately began to force their way into the daily life of the villagers. Along with this crime began to inset itself, and new roads paved. The two young boys who lived through this watched with growing apprehension and terror. This was new, unfamiliar, and loud. But the two boys also approached thier own new feelings with curiousity, the new reactions with curiousity. At age eight, they began to document it, the way little children document their every day occurances, the two documented the village occurances. By age twelve, the two were absolutely fascinated with fear, and though they took different approaches, they tried to demonstrate it to people so they would understand how powerful it was, and take notes on its effects themselves. Roy kept seeing how small changes in surroundings affected fear, how changes in peoples beliefs affected those around them, etc. Troy kept seeing how violence affected people, how things that were unexplained and harmful such as blood on the wall affected people. They argued about that constantly. They documented eachothers fears as well. Roy's parents were fairly wealthy, and due to that, they gained a high position in authority. But when they got into a car crash, the two boys were stranded in their house, Roy reeling from the death of the parents h e hadn't noticed in the last few years. And Troy began to get bored, his cousin preoccupied with other things then study; he wanted to remind his cousin why they'd spent so long documenting fear, how important it was to life, how that was the one thing that influenced everything ultimately.
He took his violence in the study of fear to another step. He killed a man in the middle of the village, where no murder had ever been committed before.
Unfortunately, though his intellect was high, he was still just a boy, and the mans screams sent the new police force for help.
Roy awoke to sirens outside his house, and a police man holding a photo ID up to his window,
" I need to talk to the adult in the house."
His cousin was later taken to court, tried, then put in juvie, dismissed from murder charges with the standard 'plea of insanity'.
That had broken him out of his calm, though. Not only did he now want to study fear, but he wanted to help others who were suffering mentally. Or they might end up like his cousin did.
He moved to a large City near by, Gotham, at age sixteen, after having graduated high school in the local secondary school. Living with a bunch of roomates, he began to work as a shop helper. Once he'd earned enough money, he went to university to earn a few PHD's and a more impressive array of Masters Degrees in the many feilds of the Social Sciences, and human physical health. At age twenty one, he left university to get a job at the local hospital. It was at that time when Batman began to disrupt things, as did new 'villians'. The fear that this produced caught Roy's eye, and he began to study it. The Scarecrow in particular was a curiousity, and he wondered if this person had the same goals he and his cousin had. If he did, then his cousin would be quite happy; they'd thought no one else had figured out just how close the human mind worked with fear, and to see this made him wonder if this person might be trying to show people how important, how vital it was. But it turned out the Scarecrow was just doing it for money, utilizing fear, not demonstrating it to the masses. Roy lost most of his interest after that; people in history had been doing that for ages, and a new person using fear was, well, nothing new.
At age twenty five, he heard on the local news that a van carrying a dangerous insane criminal had been broken out of on it's way from a village asylum to Gotham's Arkham. Paying this no heed other then noting the effects, he went back to caring for his patients.
Later that night, he ended up walking into his mirror image. Well, his mirror image with no hair. Instantly, the obvious popped up. The escaped insane individual had been his cousin. Of course, Roy didn't hate Troy, and for some weird reason, was too close to him to even resent him or be terrified of him because of the murder. Chances were, he even admitted to himself, he himself was insane. It was just a different approach his cousin took to the same science. His cousin and he went home together, and discussed things that had happened to them. During that discussion, Troy gave a proposal that shocked Roy half to death. Since the Scarecrow was only interested in money, that meant that he was cheapening the study of fear. This city might be the perfect place, the one to hold the answer, and the chance was slipping away. So he proposed the ultimate study, which might both inspire others to want to study fear as well, and teach they themselves more about it. Roy declined at first. They were intelligent, but it would be proposterous to think that they would get away scot-free with the current police force, and not to mention the odd hero the city idolized, 'Batman'. Troy persisted. That was what would make it so terrifying. They could test their theories, and though because of their different names it would seem as if it were a different person, because of their identical attributes, it would seem like it was the same person. Maybe a person with a bipolar disorder. Of course, both would be terrifying. And if even the current police force and the costumed hero couldn't catch them, then the more the society would react. And once they'd gotten every bit of information they needed, which proved one or the others theory, they would stop.
It was a success for weeks. It took half a year for them to get caught, and that was when Mayhem was reckless; he'd decided to see what he could do with computers and what he'd learned in the asylum, despite the fact Chaos was the one the two of them was good with computers.
Mayhem was brought in by Batman, who seemed rather surprised Mayhem gave in without a fight, let alone the usual conversation that 'villians' seemed to give.
That was explained later, when Mayhem escaped, the police who'd been gaurding him panicked and flinching at every shadow. Mayhem went to Roy's home, then gave him a phone number, and left. Roy was watched for awhile due to the finding of Mayhems identity, and then it ebbed. Roy moved across the country, to another state, to where his brother was, once all his patients had been helped as much as he could offer.
The City, his brother had informed him, was a place where they could start anew, and there were curiousities amock; they might not even have to trigger anything for awhile when Roy got there to have something to study.
So he moved there, got a job with his many qualifications at the Hospital. He learnt later that Mayhem had dyed his hair blond, taken to wearing brown contacts, and was working as a hot dog seller on the beach, surfing and fishing in his free time, living in the shack he worked in. Troy enjoyed that sort of thing when off study. Roy got himself a nice apartment, put a notice out for a roomate; it was a condo, so there was enough room and he was good enough at making locks that his roomate wouldn't get into anything; and settled into life easily.
